When hamsters get stressed they will become very distant from you. They are very skittish and timid and they are usually hiding. With a high amount of stress it could kill your hamster. They can get stressed from loud sounds, larger animals or really anything that could sound or is larger than them. They can get stressed just by being in a small cage.
